Painting Without Drawing - Lemons and Earthenware Pitcher

Elizabeth B. Tucker

Painting without drawing allows you to stay looser and not completely bound by a detailed drawing. I do make a small graphite thumbnail to get aquainted with the subject and to determine a size ratio, but after that I start in. I don't always start with the lightest elements as I did here. I will just as often start with the shadow shapes. It depends on what I'm painting and what I think will be the most efficient. This is painted on Fredrix canvas. 6 x 8 panel.
